Joe has represented a wide range of clients, from Fortune 100 companies in high-stakes federal court trials and arbitrations, to pro bono work on behalf of asylum seekers and those who have had their civil rights violated.   • Member of trial team that obtained the largest jury verdict in Minnesota history on behalf of Trustee Douglas A. Kelley in Kelley v. BMO Harris Bank, N.A. The jury determined that BMO Harris Bank aided and abetted breaches of fiduciary duty by Tom Petters and his co-conspirators in connection with a massive Ponzi scheme and awarded the Trustee $563 million, including $79.5 million in punitive damages.
  • Defended a major medical device manufacturer in a patent dispute where the plaintiff sought over $1 billion in damages, resulting in a jury verdict of non-infringement.
  • Defended an ethanol manufacturer against claims of patent infringement in a multi-district litigation, resulting in judgment for Joe’s clients, invalidation of the plaintiffs’ patents, and an order that they pay Joe’s clients’ legal fees.
  • Won summary judgment in a complex contract dispute on behalf of an automotive parts manufacturing joint venture in a “bet the company” case against one of the joint venture partners.
  • Obtained millions of dollars in settlements on behalf of major medical device manufacturers in disputes regarding fraudulent insurance and Medicare billing for their products.
  • Obtained a $4 million judgment in a class action suit on behalf of victims of a predatory housing scheme in New York City.
  • Obtained a record $5 million settlement on behalf of the family of a prisoner who died in custody.
  • Authored amicus briefs to the United States Supreme Court and United States Courts of Appeal on behalf of the Innocence Project, American Bar Association, and New York State Bar Association on issues including LGBT rights, government surveillance, and constitutional rights.
  • From 2013 to 2014, Joe served as a law clerk to Judge William H. Pauley III of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Before joining Anthony Ostlund, he was an associate in the litigation department at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP in New York City.
